HISTORY

From Del Riccio to the Capponi counts and to the present day

16th century

Fattoria di Muricci appears for the first time in 1589 in the Piante di Popoli and Strade dei Capitani di Parte Guelfa on map 172 Potesteria of Barberino di Val d'Elsa, Popolo di San Bartolommeo in Palazzuolo.

In the map, the much smaller house is already indicated as a Lord's house and is owned by Madonna Maddalena del Riccio.

It is however certainly identifiable by the presence of the tabernacle, now transformed into a private chapel, on the road to Noce, just before the current cemetery, for the long access road, now transformed from the 1920s into a monumental avenue of cypresses and the presence of the well in front of the house, in the same place where it is still located today.

17th-20th century

In 1610 Captain Nicola Capponi married Vittoria di Pier Antonio del Riccio and among the assets that the bride brought as a dowry there was also the small Muricci estate.

Nicola Capponi's son Ferrante (1612-1689) had no offspring and with him ended that branch of the Capponi family; Ferrante had married a cousin, Margherita di Tommaso Capponi and since the aforementioned Ferrante di Nicola was very close to his cousin Camillo di Gino Capponi (1623-1693) and he was also the godfather of the son of Camillo who was called Ferrante like him, the in 1682 he left universal heir of his property. In this way the Fattoria di Muricci becomes part of the heritage of that branch of the Capponi family that still exists today.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the property underwent a major renovation which, starting in the 1920s with the construction of the monumental cellar, ended in 1853.

The farm was completely transformed by eliminating the buildings that had gradually been added to the sixteenth-century block and giving it the appearance it still maintains today.

Innovative structural solutions were adopted, which made it a model of modernity compared to its era.

In 1861, at the First National Exhibition in Florence the Fattoria di Muricci obtained three gold medals.

The Capponi remained owners of Muricci until 1896 when it was sold to the marquise Ernesta Canonici Mattei of the Dukes of Jupiter of the late Carlo, born in Ferrara and wife of the marquis Alfonso De Ghantuz Cubbe, a family originally from Aleppo in Syria, present in Livorno from the end of the XVIII century and admitted to the Livorno nobility in 1836.

Just the Marquis Alfonso will bring his family to the brink through risky initiatives and risky choices that forced the Marchesa Ernesta to separate to save her own heritage and the Ghantuz Cubbe family to move from Livorno to Rome in the early 1920s.

It was in the context of this departure from her husband, married in 1893, and from Tuscany, that the marquise sold the Fattoria di Muricci to Cavalier Brunetto Calamai, a wool industrialist from Prato, on December 30, 1918, from the descendants of which she is still owned.

In recent years a complex restoration program that has involved the property in its entirety has allowed us to restore the original charm of this house, without renouncing the comforts to which today's life has accustomed us.

The Municipality of Tavarnelle has included the Fattoria di Muricci in the architectural cultural assets present in the municipal area since the nineties of the twentieth century
